About the Event

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fishbowl Forum participants:

Alan Gou : I am a sophomore Presidential Scholar (or senior) at Rutgers University, majoring in economics, computer science, and physics, with an interest in everything from high tech to the state of education in America. I was a PCE student reporter for two years and am thrilled to participate in this event.

Austin Jia : I''m a Junior at Millburn High School. I am the President of my Achieving-Better-Communications (ABC) Club, which I started two years ago. We started out by hosting discussions about controversial topics such as Affirmative Action, Social Media, and Peer Pressure, which were designed to engage parents and their children in conversation that they never had on their own. Later, I encouraged the parents to push their kids to take part in events outside of their comfort zone such as participating in the SCA5 panel discussion hosted at the local library and setting up video calls with "pen pals" from Harbin, China. Aside from running the club, I also enjoy tennis, violin, and debating.

Ellen Lou : I am 18 years old. I recently graduated from Hillsborough High School in their class of 2014. I currently am taking a gap year and I have deferred from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. I am currently a professional ballet dancer with the American Repertory Ballet in Princeton, NJ.

Jennifer Q. Chen : I grew up not too far from here, in East Brunswick, NJ. I graduated from the Huntsman program in International Studies and Business at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 2008. After university, I worked for Lehman Brothers for a brief period of time before moving onto the world of ad technology. I currently work full-time as the Director of Global Trading at Sizmek and also works night-time and weekends on Givology.org. Givology is an online giving platform that connects donors to underprivileged students in developing countries. I started Givology in 2008 while a senior in college because I was inspired by the work of nonprofits in education and touched by the students I visited in rural Northwest China when I traveled there as a junior. There was a huge disconnect in education that my co-founder and I both felt needed to be addressed. I also firmly believe that giving back should be a part of everyone''s lives, no matter how busy and at what age.

Jess Fong : I am currently a senior at Johns Hopkins University, majoring in International Studies and Economics, with a concentration on China. Last fall, I studied abroad in Beijing, at the Tsinghua School of Economics. I have always enjoyed writing and debating, and thus published three books while I was in high school. I also participated in Model UN throughout high school and am currently a Director at the Johns Hopkins Model UN Conference (JHUMUNC). In recent years, I took up teaching, mainly reading, writing and test prep. Last summer, I worked with a local learning center to develop a Model UN/debating program for younger children. Having gained so much from such programs in high school, I wanted to give younger students a platform so they are not shy to join these public speaking-related extracurricular activities later on.

Kevin Liu : I am currently a student at Princeton University in the Operations Research and Financial Engineering department and graduated from Ridge High School. I enjoy playing clarinet, playing volleyball, and listening to rap music. On campus I am part of the business team for the Daily Princetonian, on the executive board of Princeton Social Innovation, a Chinese mentor for the Language Fellows Program, a member of the Princeton Sinfonia, and a member of the Princeton Asian American Students Association.
